My Brother Asked Me for Money I Had Saved for Years, and When I Refused, Our Mother Reacted in the Most Appalling Way Possible
I live with my mother and juggle two jobs. I pay for my own groceries and bills, since my mothers entire pension goes towards supporting my older brother. I work tirelessly to save money for a flat of my own, and balancing all the expenses while still putting aside enough for my dream home is quite the challenge. Nevertheless, I remain committed to achieving my goal through hard work and discipline.
Not long ago, my brother asked me for a loan to put down a deposit for something abroad. Deep down, I knew he wouldnt pay me back, so I calmly told him no. I explained I needed every penny to buy my own flat. Unfortunately, he didnt take my refusal well and immediately complained to our mother.
My brothers finances are rather shaky. He works as a taxi driver and does odd repair jobs, so his income is never consistent. On top of that, he and his wife have a habit of wasting money on unnecessary thingsordering expensive takeaway and buying luxury gadgets. Their lifestyle means they’re always just scraping by, despite having three children and lacking a stable home.
In contrast, I focus on saving and managing my expenses responsibly. Im content with my old mobile, whereas my brothers wife is always searching for the latest upgrade on credit. When I wouldnt loan my brother the money, he took offence and brought mum into it.
Mum tried to persuade me to help him out, even though he hadnt paid back previous debts. She offered a generous deal: if I gave him the money, shed sign over her flat to me. Still, I refusedI didnt want to rely on inheritance to secure my future.
Mum accepted my choice, but things got complicated when my brother and his family decided to move in with her to save money. They didnt consider my situation, and I was left with nowhere to live. Mum assumed Id be fine since I had savings, and my brother cut off all contact.
Although its been a difficult time for my family, I dont feel guilty for the decision I made. I believe I acted according to my principles, putting my future and dreams first and responsibly managing the money Ive worked so hard to save. What Ive learned is that sticking to your values is vital, even when others dont understandsometimes you have to make tough choices to protect your own hopes and well-being.
