My parents could never have imagined that my brother’s relationship with Rebecca would cause such chaos in our family!

When my brother turned 18 last month, he surprised us all with a rather unexpected announcementhe wants to marry his girlfriend, Emily. Our parents, however, were anything but pleased with this turn of events. Theyve never really warmed to Emily, mainly due to her lack of manners and seemingly little interest in her studies. Shes enrolled at college but barely bothers to attend her lectures, something that irritates my mum and dad no end. Theyre convinced shes leading my brother astray and pulling him away from his own education.

Emilys rude behaviour and her tendency to dress in a way my parents find sloppy and inappropriate for a young woman have only deepened their disapproval. Even her own family isnt keen on their relationship, and they prefer to keep her at arms length from their home. Despite the fact that my brother and Emily have been together for two years now, shes shown nothing to change our parents minds.

My brother, annoyed at our parents objections, is standing firm. Hes made it clear hes not about to give up on someone he loves just to please them. Personally, I remain neutral about Emily, but I cant help but worry her presence might stir up tension at home. My brother still lives with us, while Emily lives with her mum, stepdad, and younger sister. They cant afford to rent their own place, so my brother has suggested she move in with us and share his bedroom.

Things came to a head when our dad made some cutting remarks, questioning how they thought theyd cope in a bare room without proper furniture, and insisting my brother would have to pay all the expenses. In response, my brother put his foot down, demanding his share of the house, and left in a huff with nothing but a small backpack. For several weeks, they drift from one friends sofa to another, until eventually they both come back, determined to stay together, come what may.

My brother then shocked our parents again by declaring he would sell his share of the house, implying he was ready to cut ties if they refused to accept his decision. This sparked a heated confrontation, and he walked out once more. It seemed Emilys mother might actually be fueling things from behind the scenes; she has some legal connections and may have offered them advice. I tried to play peacemaker and restore some harmony in our family, but both my parents and my brother told me to mind my own business.
