Parents Borrowed Money from Their Son, Promising to Pay It Back—But When They Couldn’t Fulfill Their Promise, Tensions with Their Daughter-in-Law Grew, Leading to a Strained Family Relationship

Melissa and her husband always cherished their home in the village. Yet, according to Lisa, their daughter-in-law, there was nothing particularly appealing about it. The place lacked modern conveniences; everything was outside, and the gardens and greenhouses demanded constant work. Still, Melissa and her husband lived there from April to October every year. If it were solely up to them, the elderly couple would have gladly stayed through the winter as well, but doing so would require a considerable investment in the property. “It would make more sense if they spent their holidays in a resort,” Lisa often remarked.

About five years ago, Melissa and her husband asked their son and Lisa to help with some much-needed renovations around the house. The young couple had a sizable sum tucked away in their bank account, money they werent planning to use anytime soon. So, without hesitation, they lent the funds to Melissa and her husband.

Melissa and her husband gave their word that the debt would be repaid within two years. Shortly after the money changed hands, Lisa gave birth to twins. Throughout that period, Melissa provided invaluable support to her daughter-in-law. I honestly cant imagine how Id have managed without my mother-in-laws help, Lisa reflected. She came every day, even putting aside her beloved cottage. My own mother simply couldnt help in the same way, since she was still working. Meanwhile, Melissas husband tended the garden by himself for two years.

During those two years, Melissa often brought up the subject of repaying the debt, reassuring Lisa and her son that they would sort it out. Gradually, however, the topic faded away, as life got in the way. Melissas husband became ill and couldnt work for a year, and Melissa herself had been retired for six years. It was becoming clear that repaying the borrowed money might not be possible now.

Lisas friend suggested, Lets just forget the money. Your mother-in-law helped you and your son tremendously, even gave you fresh vegetables and berries from the village. The friend continued, Honestly, debts between parents and children rarely work out. However, Lisas own mother insisted, They borrowed the money and promised to pay it back.

Caught in the middle, Lisa was unsure what to do next. What would you do if you were in her place?
