She arrived at the hospital alone, with no one by her side during labour: and the moment her baby was born, the doctor took one look at her and noticed something that made him cry.
Edith Baker arrived at the maternity unit alone. In the way of dreams, she was not surprised that no one had come with her; her husband had left months earlier, after she told him about the pregnancy. The labour went on for hours, and the lights above the bed hummed like trapped bees. At last the newborn’s first cry rang out, a thin, clear sound that seemed to come from the far end of a tunnel. The baby was perfectly healthy.
The doctor lifted the child carefully in his arms to hand him to Edith, but something went wrong on the way. He stopped. His hands trembled. He looked at the baby’s face, then at Edith’s, and tears rose in his eyes.
“Doctor, is everything all right?” Edith asked.
He nodded, but could not speak for a moment. Then, in a voice that cracked in the middle, he whispered something that left Edith frozen.
The rest of the story is in the first comment below.
The doctor had noticed the birthmark on the baby’s arm: a small, pale strawberry mark. He recognised it at once. It was exactly the same mark that his own son, Edwin, had carried, the son he had not seen or spoken to for years, the son who had vanished from his life. His heart tightened.
Edith followed his gaze and asked, worried, what was happening.
Dr Ashford took a long breath, tears on his face, and explained that the mark was identical to his son’s, and that the baby was therefore his grandson.
Edith felt the world tilt. The loneliness of the long labour melted away, replaced by a deep and overwhelming warmth. She held her son tightly against her chest, while the doctor, moved beyond words, realised that this small baby had just restored a bond that had been broken for a very long time.
