Sixteen Years Later, My Children’s Birth Mother Returned and Told Them She Was Their Real Mum—Their Reaction Left Me Absolutely Stunned
Eighteen years ago, I married David. His past was rather bleak, all thanks to his ex-wife who abandoned him and the children, running off with her lover. David and Anna were once truly in love. Together, they had two beautiful childrena son, Daniel, and a daughter, Poppy. When Daniel was four and Poppy three, David lost his job. Those days were particularly grim for the family. Anna did her best to find work, desperately trying to earn some money so the children would have enough to eat. Meanwhile, David took solace in the shed at the bottom of the garden, drowning his sorrows with some mates and grumbling about the government, forever complaining about how unfair life was. Anna became absolutely exhausted by it all, and then a wealthy man began pursuing her.
In the end, Anna couldnt resist the temptation. She left David and the children, running off with her new partner. Poor Daniel and Poppy were left utterly alonethe neighbours rallied around, making sure the children had food, even trying to keep an eye on them when they could. All the while, David remained holed up with his friends in the shed, oblivious to the fact that his wife had actually packed up and left. By the time he finally came to his senses, the children had already been taken into care.
I actually met David at a friends wedding. I was drawn to him straight away. We started talking, and over time, I did my utmost to help him find some direction and get his head straight.
After we married, I suggested we try to bring the children home from the care home. I cant have children of my own, but my heart went out to those poor kidsI loved them from the moment they came to live with us. They seemed to love me in return. All these years, neither Daniel nor Poppy ever realised I wasnt their birth mother. Eighteen years passed like that. Then, one day, Anna turned up out of nowhere and asked to meet her children. She explained to them that she was their biological mother. Daniel hardly batted an eyelidhe simply told Anna he only had one mum, and that was me. Poppy, on the other hand, was warmer, and she chose to forgive her mother.
To be honest, I was initially against them reconnectingI couldnt forgive Anna for what shed done. But I understand that shes living with a great deal of guilt and now wants to make amends. Ive realised that its right to try to help her. After all, being a mother isnt just about giving birth, but also about whos there day in and day out. In our own way, my children have ended up with two mums, and I can live with that.
