There was once a time, many years ago, in a small town near York, when our classroom welcomed a new girl named Emily Cartwright. From the moment she set foot in our midst, the boys began to tease her, eager to test this unfamiliar presence. Yet, it soon became clear that Emily was no easy target. Her unshakeable confidence became her shield, allowing her to meet every challenge with grace.

In the same class was a girl called Harriet Holmes, who, sadly, bore the brunt of the boys mockery. They would make cruel jokes about her weight, calling out taunts and insults that often left her silent or in tears. She never tried to strike back or outdo them, which only seemed to embolden their laughter. Look at Harriet run! theyd jeer, always finding fresh ways to make her the laughing stock. This treatment had gone on for what felt like an eternityuntil Emily arrived.

Emily was tall, nearly twice Harriets height. As soon as she joined our ranks, she too became a target for the boys sarcasm and jibes. Unlike Harriet, however, Emily was no stranger to schoolyard games; at her last school in Manchester, she had been popular, well-liked, and actively involved in local neighbourhood outings.

The defining moment came one afternoon in the school canteen. As we queued for lunch, one of the boys hurled a crusty bread roll at Emily, making yet another cruel jest about her figure. Emily looked surprised for a moment, calmly brushed the crumbs from her tweed trousers, and chose not to respond. Later, in the hallway, when another boy remarked on her shape, Emily decided it was time to confront them. Is your life so dull, she asked with a smirk, that all you can think about is my figure? If you want to stare, be my guesttheres nothing stopping you! Her bold reply earned her a brief respite from their mocking.

During a PE lesson, we were asked to leap over the vaulting horse. When Emilys turn came, the horse toppled under her weight, but she didnt falter. With remarkable agility, she executed a swift somersault and landed softly on the polished floorboards. Despite her display of skill, the boys continued their laughter. Emily responded firmly, questioning their amusement and offering to let them lift her if they found it so entertaining. They accepted, hoisting her up while laughing all the more.

Over the holidays, Emily took it upon herself to make some changes. She became disciplined, paid attention to her diet and exercise, dyed her hair, and emerged a more radiant version of herself.

On her return to school, the boys were struck by her transformation. Suddenly, everyone wanted to be her friend; yet Emily, with a gleam in her eye and a broad smile, approached the ringleader of her former tormentors, playfully asking if he needed help coming up with new nicknames.

Throughout everything, Emilys confidence never wavered. She never let their cruel comments touch her spirit; instead, she chose to stand tall and embrace her own sense of self-worth, walking through the halls unbothered by their attention. In the end, her example taught all of us a lesson weve carried since, about the true value of self-belief and dignity.
