There were womens clothes scattered across the floor, and when I stepped into the bedroom, I saw him therewith another woman.

London

James and I had been together for over three years. Ours was a relationship built on trust and joy. Wed already introduced our families and had started making plans for a wedding. Everything seemed to be falling perfectly into place, and I was certain I wanted to have children with this man and grow old beside him.

The day he returned from a work trip, we hadnt planned to meet, but I wanted to surprise him. I took the day off work, baked his favourite Victoria sponge, and drove to his flat. Luckily, I had my own set of keys, so while he slept, I even had enough time to brew some fresh coffee to go with the cake.

I slipped quietly to the bedroom, turning the handle with barely a sound. Before I could even step inside, I nearly tripped over something on the carpet. The room was shrouded in shadows, so I flicked on my phones torch to see what Id stumbled into. Thats when I saw themclothes that definitely werent mine, strewn all around the room. As I walked further in, I saw him lying there, entangled with another woman.

They were asleep, wrapped around each other. I didnt lose my head or make a scene. I simply closed the door softly behind me, set his favourite cake and my keys on the kitchen counter, and walked out. The air outside was bitterly cold, and I couldnt face going home to my parents. So I found a bench in the park and let the tears come.

Some time later, a young man named William noticed me and crouched beside the bench to ask what was wrong. I didnt tell him about the betrayal, but we started talking, conversation flowing as though it was meant to. In a twist of fate, we ended up at his place, sipping tea late into the night.

Now, we live together and are making plans to marry. I like to think it was fate that brought us together that night; after all, nothing in life ever happens without a reason.
