“Two Weeks to Pack Up and Find Somewhere Else to Live: Daughters Offended After Mum Draws the Line”

“Two weeks to pack your things and find somewhere else to live.” The daughters were offended.

Sarah lost her husband at a young age and raised her two daughters entirely on her own. Despite all the hardships, she never uttered a single word of complaint. Not only did her daughters grow up well, but they were both able to achieve a good educationsomething Sarah worked hard to provide. She juggled two jobs so she could pay for their schooling.

Then, one day, her eldest introduced a boyfriend and calmly announced that he was her future husbandexcept, as it happened, he had nowhere to live. Before long, a child was born, and Sarah had to let the young couple take over her room. Sarah moved in with her younger daughter.

At first, Sarah assumed this arrangement was just temporary. Naturally, her daughter and son-in-law would eventually save up for a place of their own, and life would return to what it had been. But as time went by, her daughter and son-in-law made little effort. And why would they? They had a roof over their heads and a fridge that was always full. Sarah, of course, was the one making sure everyone was fed.

She was met with no thanksonly increasing arguments. The younger daughter complained that cleaning up after her brother-in-law was not her responsibility. The elder insisted she didnt have time for anything, what with a baby to care for. The son-in-law remarked that taking the rubbish out or doing the washing-up was “not a mans job” and spent all day glued to his computer.

Soon, the atmosphere at home became so tense that Sarah dreaded returning at all. When she gently suggested her daughter find a flat of her own with her husband and baby, she was met with, Well, were saving for a mortgage. Where do you expect us to find the money? And so they stayed put.

The straw that broke the camels back came when her younger daughter brought round her boyfriend: Mum, hes from Manchester and has nowhere to live. Hell stay with us. Sarah thought to herself, Where? The kitchen? Her daughter, apparently expecting this, said calmly that the kitchen wouldnt be comfortablebut, if her mother moved into the kitchen, she could at least have a bedroom to herself.

That was it for Sarah; she had reached her limit. She realised that no one considered her wishes in her own home. If they could, they would probably shuffle her off to a care home without a second thought.

She gave them all a clear ultimatum: You have two weeks to pack and find somewhere else to live. Her daughters took great offence. They vowed she would never see her grandchildren and told her she would be left all alone in her old age. But Sarah stood firm. If that was to be her fate, then so be it. It was time her daughters faced life on their own two feet.

Now, her 50th birthday is approaching. Shes unsure whether her children will even come to wish her happy birthday. Do you think she did the right thing by asking her daughters to leave? What would you have done in her shoes?

Sometimes love means knowing when to let go, so others can learn to stand on their own.
