When My Mum Discovered I Was Married, Had a Good Job, and Owned My Own Flat, She Quickly Came Asking…

When my mother discovered that I was married, had a respectable job, and a flat of my own, she wasted no time in coming to ask for my financial support.

Mother had always been a strict presence in my life. My father, who often travelled on business, left her to manage things alone. He was fond of me, but his return always meant my receiving many gifts, trying in his own way to make up for his absences. My mother, on the other hand, rarely showed that sort of warmth. Then, one day, Father left on yet another trip and, sadly, never returned.

At school, friendship had eluded me. I turned up looking rather shabby, clothed in a battered old uniform Mother found thrown out by someone in the neighbourhood. She was forever telling me, Make do with what youve got. I need to put my own life in order and have no money for frills. So, I endured that dreadful outfit all through the fifth form.

Later, a kindly neighbour gifted me her daughters old uniform after she finished school, and I wore that until I graduated. As for my shoes, I made do with what was availablenever the right fit, but they did for some years until my feet outgrew them. Despite it all, I finished grammar school with top marks and resolved to go on to university, choosing economics as my field. Even at university, I carried on wearing hand-me-downs given to me by friends when they tired of their clothes.

It was at university that I met Henry, a recent graduate. Our friendship blossomed into something more, and before long he introduced me to his parents. I remember feeling mortified by the state of my shoesworn through, letting in the rain. His mother pretended not to notice and, the very next day, invited me round and presented me with a new pair.

Id worried that Henrys parents might not warm to me, but they welcomed me as one of their own. I dont know how I deserved such kindness. They gifted us a cottage when we were wed, and after I finished my studies, my mother-in-law offered me a good post in her firm. For the first time, I could afford necessities without worry. I have never ceased to thank God for helping me find my way through life.

When my own mother realised I was settledmarried, employed, and living independentlyshe came promptly, asking for financial help. This conversation did not escape the attention of my stepmother. She called for my husband and son to return home at once. Ultimately, my husband told my mother plainly that she should not expect anything further from me. He expressed gratitude for having a daughter, but made it clear that she was never to set foot in our home again. Since that day, my mother has not sought me out, and now I await the birth of my child with hope for new beginnings.
