When We Welcomed a Retired German Shepherd into Our Home, We Had No Idea How Much He Would Transform Our Lives

After a month spent training as a dog handler, I finally received a mature German Shepherd named Max. The three-year-old service dog, stern and serious, had already been through three other owners. At first, they intended to send Max off to a checkpoint assignment, but in the end, he was handed over to me as the new trainee. For one reason or another, nobody seemed willing to keep him he was awfully resistant to following orders. There was even talk of leaving him shut away in the kennel and only bringing him out when absolutely needed. But seeing that both my wife and I had no shortage of relatives well-versed in handling dogs, we figured we could manage just fine.

In those first days, feeding him took a bit of planning Id use a snow shovel to slide his bowl into his pen, just to be safe. But, as it turns out, a dogs heart really can thaw. Gradually, Max grew warmer, and after a year youd hardly recognise him.

At that time, our youngest son, Oliver, was just a year and a half old. One spring afternoon, I was in the back garden clearing away the leftover rubbish. Our daughter Alice was at nursery, so Oliver was pottering about with us. The sight I saw made me pause. There was Oliver toddling through the damp flowerbeds, and right behind him was Max. Each time Oliver lost his balance and tumbled onto the wet earth, Max would gently lift him back up by the hood of his coat. He truly became part of the family then.

One evening, my wife and I were at home while the head of security at my workplace held a retirement do nearby. The wine was flowing, and although my wife hardly touched a drop, it seemed everyone else was indulging. When it came time to leave, she volunteered to help see the chief off, insisting shed look in on things. By late evening, around eleven oclock, I was sat out on the porch, growing anxious when she wasnt answering her phone. I began to worry she might have wandered by the river and, in her tipsy state, gotten herself into trouble.

When I was just about at my wits end and ready to dash off looking for her, I saw the garden gate swing open. Max strolled through first, leading my wife behind him on the lead, swaying and half-asleep. Max led her straight to the porch, and when she collapsed into the armchair, he sat down beside me, fixing me with a look I could only describe as smug. I never realised before that dogs could look so comically sarcastic. To this day, I still tease my wife about how the dog managed to bring her home safe and sound.

Reflecting on these moments, Ive learnt that patience and trust can turn even the most stubborn soul into family whether it’s a dog or a person. Sometimes, it takes someone with more loyalty and persistence than sense, like Max, to remind you that everyone deserves a second chance.
